Route 21 southbound lane shift this weekend in Newark
McCarter Highway viaduct rehabilitation project advances

(TRENTON) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced a lane shift on Route 21 McCarter Highway southbound in order to advance work on the Route 21 viaduct in Newark, Essex County.

Beginning at 10 p.m., Friday, September 16, until 5 a.m. Saturday, September 17, NJDOT’s contractor, De Foe Corporation, will remove a temporary cattle chute configuration by shifting concrete barriers on the Route 21 southbound viaduct. Route 21 southbound traffic will be shifted onto the newly reconstructed center and right lanes. One lane of traffic on Route 21 south will be maintained at all times during the stage change. This new configuration will allow for bridge repairs to continue on the left lane of the bridge rehabilitation project. Route 21 northbound will remain unaffected.

NJDOT has designed work on the $30.7 million federally-funded viaduct rehabilitation project to be performed in stages. The project is expected to be completed by the end of summer 2017.

Portable variable message signs are being utilized to provide advance notification to the public of all traffic pattern changes associated with the work.

The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website www.511nj.org for real-time travel information and for NJDOT news follow us on Twitter @NJDOT_info.
