31st Street lane closures necessary in Union City for resurfacing
as the I-495 westbound signal work continues

Temporary lane closures required

(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced temporary lane closures on 31st Street in Union City for resurfacing, as the I-495 westbound overhead signal installation work continues in Hudson County.

Beginning at 9 a.m. until 3 p.m., Monday, April 10, and again on Tuesday, April 11, NJDOT’s contractor, Orchard Holdings LLC., is scheduled to alternate the closing of one lane on 31st between New York Avenue and John F. Kennedy Boulevard in Union City for milling and paving.

One lane will remain opened at all times. Any required traffic detours will be coordinated between state and local police. If work is completed earlier, the roadways will be reopened accordingly.

The $4 million state-funded Information Technology Services (ITS) construction project, which began in September 2015, requires temporary shoulder, lane, and ramp closures due to concrete foundation work and electrical installations. The installations include Dynamic Message Signs (DMS), Variable Speed Limit Signs (VSLS) and Electronic Lane Control Signals (LCS) on westbound I-495. NJDOT is coordinating with the Port Authority of NY/NJ, the NJ Turnpike Authority, NJ TRANSIT, and local authorities to advance the project in stages and minimize impacts to motorists. The project, which will require additional closures and detours, is expected to be completed in summer 2017.

Construction signs are being utilized to provide advance notification to the motoring public of all traffic pattern changes associated with the work.

The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website www.511nj.org for real-time travel information and for NJDOT news follow us on Twitter @NJDOT_info.
