New I-287 northbound ramp to Route 202/206 southbound to open Monday in Somerset County

Exit 22A closed and detoured this weekend to prepare for opening

(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced the opening Monday of the new Exit 22A ramp from I-287 northbound to Route 202/206 southbound in Bedminster, Somerset County.

In preparation for opening the new ramp, the existing Exit 22A will be closed and detoured this weekend. Motorists will be directed to use Exit 22B for the duration of the closure.

Beginning at 10:00 p.m., tonight, Friday, September 22 until 6:00 a.m. Monday, September 25, NJDOT’s Contractor, Midlantic Construction LLC., is scheduled to close Exit 22A, the I‑287northbound ramp to Route 202/Route 206 southbound in order to prepare for the opening of the new permanent Exit 22A ramp as part of the I-287 /Route 202/Route 206 Interchange Improvements project. The following detour will be in place:

I-287 northbound ramp to Route 202/206 southbound Detour:

  • Motorists will be directed to take Exit 22B to Route 202/Route 206 northbound
  • Motorists will need to stay right on Route 202/Route 206 northbound, and take the U-Turn exit at River Road onto Route 202/Route 206 southbound

On Monday morning, motorists will be able to use the new realigned ramp from I‑287northbound to Route 202/Route 206 southbound. The new ramp is designed to eliminate a stop condition at the end of the ramp to provide for continuous traffic flow onto Route 202/206 southbound. This should also reduce potential queuing of traffic on the ramp and onto I-287.

The $24.5 million federally-funded I-287/I-78/Route 202/Route 206 Interchange Improvements project will enhance safety and improve traffic operations between the existing I-287 interchanges with I-78 and Route 202/206. Two new bridges are being constructed over I-287, one over northbound lanes, and another over southbound lanes. The project is expected to be completed in late 2019.

Variable message signs are being utilized throughout the project limits to provide advance notification to motorists of all traffic pattern changes associated with the interchange improvement project. Throughout the project, NJDOT will provide information before any upcoming road or ramp closures.

The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weatheror other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT's traffic information website www.511nj.org for real-time travel information and for NJDOT news follow us on Twitter @NJDOT_info.
