Railroad-crossing repair projects begin this week
in Hackensack

Necessary safety work will require road closures and detours

(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced two railroad crossing rehabilitation projects that will require the closure and detour of Atlantic Street and Anderson Street in Hackensack, Bergen County.

Beginning at 9 a.m. Wednesday, September 27, until 9p.m. Tuesday, October 3, the two-way traffic on Atlantic Street is scheduled to be closed at the railroad crossing intersection with Railroad Avenue.

In addition, starting at 9 a.m. Wednesday, September 27, until 9p.m. Tuesday, October 3, the two-way traffic on Anderson Street is schedule to be closed at the railroad crossing intersection with Linden Street.

The two existing railroad crossings will be removed and replaced with new concrete crossings and asphalt approaches. The following detours will remain in place:

Atlantic Street

Atlantic Street eastbound Detour:

  • Motorists traveling eastbound on Atlantic Street will be directed to make a right onto Newman Street
  • Turn left onto Essex Street
  • Turn left onto Railroad Avenue northbound
  • Follow to Atlantic Street

Atlantic Street westbound Detour:

  • Motorists traveling westbound on Atlantic Street will be directed to make a right onto Union Street
  • Turn left onto Central Avenue
  • Turn left onto Railroad Avenue southbound
  • Follow to Atlantic Street

Anderson Street

Anderson Street eastbound Detour:

  • Motorists traveling eastbound on Anderson Street will be directed to take Linden Street southbound
  • Turn left onto Passaic Street
  • Turn left onto Union Street
  • Turn left onto Anderson Street

Anderson Street westbound Detour:

  • Motorists traveling westbound on Anderson Street will be directed to take Union Street southbound
  • Turn right onto Passaic Street

  • Turn right onto Anderson Street

The detours will be coordinated with the local police. If work is completed earlier, the roadways will be reopened accordingly.

In order to provide safer and smoother railroad crossing in Hackensack, the existing crossings will be replaced with new concrete crossings and new asphalt approaches. This federally-funded project is included within NJDOT’s railroad grade-crossing safety program which repairs, upgrades, or removes approximately 30 crossings each year, statewide.

The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weatheror other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT's traffic information website www.511nj.org for real-time travel information and for NJDOT news follow us on Twitter @NJDOT_info.
