Route 206 Hillsborough Bypass final contract begins
Work begins on two ends of bypass roadway in Hillsborough
(Trenton) - The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced the start of work on the final phase of the Route 206 Hillsborough Bypass project Contract B, which will build the final sections of the Bypass in Hillsborough, Somerset County.
Beginning at 9:30 p.m. on Friday, April 13 until 7 a.m. on Saturday, April 14, NJDOT’s contractor, Konkus Corporation, is scheduled to establish a temporary alternating traffic pattern to restripe Route 206 and create a work zone next to the southbound lane of Route 206. Partial lane and shoulder closures on Route 206 are needed to create the work zone.
On the northern end of the project, the alternating traffic pattern on Route 206 with flagmen will maintain one lane in each direction between Hamilton Road and Opie Road.
Once the shift is in place, traffic will be on the eastside of the road to allow for utility relocations, grading, drainage, basin upgrades, milling and paving. The temporary traffic pattern is expected to remain in place until late 2018.
In addition, later this spring an alternating traffic pattern is expected to be established on the southern end of the project limits between the bridge over Pike Run and Pierson Drive.
Route 206 Bypass
The Route 206 Bypass will shift through traffic onto a new 3.6-mile section of Route 206 to the east of the existing highway between Mountain View Road and Old Somerville Road, creating opportunities for the development of a town center along the current Route 206 in Hillsborough, Somerset County.
The 1.7-mile center section of the Bypass was built first as part of a $44 million state-funded contract. It was completed and opened in October 2013. Since then some utilities have been relocated, some trees cleared, and grading and drainage work was completed.
The $36.6 million state and federally-funded Contract B will construct the remaining portion of the Route 206 Bypass. The project limits are from Mountain View Road to Hillsborough Road on the southern end and from Amwell Road (CR 514) to Old Somerville Road on the northern end. A jughandle ramp will be constructed on the northeast corner of the Route 206 and Triangle Road/Falcon Road intersection. Construction is anticipated to be completed by fall 2020.
In addition, for the Hillsborough Bypass, NJDOT is advancing two other projects to improve Route 206 in Hillsborough in the next several years. These projects are designed to improve safety and reduce congestion through the township by widening approximately two miles of Route 206 north of the bypass. Details about the other two projects are below:
Route 206, Doctor’s Way to Valley Road
- The project will widen the existing Route 206 from one lane in each direction to two lanes in each direction between Doctor’s Way and Valley Road, which is just north of where the Route 206 Bypass will begin (Old Somerville Road)
- Design activities and acquisition of property for the project are currently underway
- Construction is anticipated to start in fall 2019 and be completed by fall 2021
Route 206, Valley Road to Brown Avenue
- The project will continue widening the existing Route 206 from one lane in each direction to two lanes in each direction between Valley Road and Brown Avenue
- Environmental work and supporting design activities for the project are currently underway
- Construction is anticipated to start in 2021 and take approximately two years to complete
Variable message signs are being utilized throughout the project limits to provide advance notification to motorists of all traffic pattern changes associated with the bypass project. Throughout the project, NJDOT will provide information before upcoming road or ramp closures.
