Railroad-crossing repairs begin Thursday in East Rutherford

Necessary safety work will require road closure and detours

(Trenton) -New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced a railroad crossing rehabilitation project beginning tomorrow that will require a seven-day closure and detour of Paterson Avenue in East Rutherford, Bergen County.

Beginning at 7 a.m., tomorrow, Thursday, September 6, until 7 p.m., Wednesday, September 12, the two-way traffic on Paterson Avenue between Poplar Street and Oak Street is scheduled to be closed at the railroad crossing. The existing railroad crossing will be removed and replaced with a new concrete crossing and asphalt approach.

The following detours will be in place:

Paterson Avenue eastbound
Motorists traveling eastbound on Paterson Avenue will be directed to turn right onto Oak Street, left onto Central Avenue, left onto Poplar Street and back to Paterson Avenue.

Paterson Avenue westbound
Motorists traveling westbound on Paterson Avenue will be directed to turn left onto Poplar Street, right onto Central Avenue, right onto Oak Street and back to Paterson Avenue.

The traffic detours will be coordinated with the local police. The roadway will be reopened if work is completed earlier.

In order to provide safer and smoother railroad crossing in East Rutherford, Bergen County, the existing crossings will be replaced with new concrete crossings and new asphalt approaches. This federally-funded project is included within NJDOT’s railroad grade-crossing safety program that repairs, upgrades, or removes approximately 30 crossings each year, statewide.

The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website www.511nj.org for construction updates and real-time travel information and for NJDOT news follow us on Twitter @NJDOT_info or on the NJDOT Facebook page.
