Railroad-crossing repairs begin today in Neptune

Necessary safety work will require road closure and detours

(Trenton) -New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced the start of a railroad crossing rehabilitation project that will require a 7-day closure and detour of 11th Avenue in Neptune, Monmouth County.

Beginning at 8 a.m., today, Thursday, September 20, until 7 p.m., Thursday, September 27, the two-way traffic on 11th Avenue, between South Main Street and Memorial Drive is scheduled to be closed at the railroad crossing. The existing railroad crossing will be removed and replaced with a new concrete crossing and asphalt approach. The following detours will be in place:

11th Avenue westbound detour
Vehicles traveling westbound on 11th Avenue will be directed to continue north on South Main Street/Route 71, left onto Corlies Avenue/Route 33, left onto Memorial Drive.

11th Avenue eastbound detour
Vehicles wishing to travel eastbound on 11th Avenue will be directed to continue north on Memorial Drive, right onto Corlies Avenue/Route 33, right onto South Main Street/Route 71 and back towards 11th Avenue.

The traffic detours will be coordinated with the local police. The roadway will be reopened if work is completed earlier.

In order to provide safer and smoother railroad crossing in Neptune, Monmouth County, the existing crossings will be replaced with new concrete crossings and new asphalt approaches. This federally funded project is included within NJDOT’s railroad grade-crossing safety program that repairs, upgrades, or removes approximately 30 crossings each year, statewide.

The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website www.511nj.org for construction updates and real-time travel information and for NJDOT news follow us on Twitter @NJDOT_info or on the NJDOT Facebook page.
