Route 22 ramp to Routes 1 & 9 southbound to be closed overnight as Haynes Avenue Bridge project in Newark nears completion

Routes 1 & 9 southbound local lane closures also required

(Trenton) -New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced the Route 22 eastbound ramp to Routes 1 & 9 southbound local lane to be closed and detoured tonight and Monday night as the Haynes Avenue improvements project in Newark nears completion.

Beginning at 10 p.m., tonight, Friday, September 21 until 6 a.m. Saturday morning, and again at 10 p.m., Monday, September 24 until 6 a.m. Tuesday morning, NJDOT’s contractor, Anselmi and Decicco, Inc., will close the Route 22 eastbound ramp to Routes 1&9 southbound local lane, requiring a detour.

Route 22 eastbound ramp to Routes 1 & 9 southbound detour

  • Motorists traveling eastbound on Route 22 will be directed to Route 21/McCarter Highway northbound
  • Take exit to South Broad Street
  • Turn right onto Emmet Street
  • Turn right onto Route 21/McCarter Highway southbound and follow signs to Routes 1 & 9 southbound.

During these overnight closures, Routes 1 & 9 southbound local lanes will be restriped requiring alternating lane closures of the right and left lanes.  One travel lane will be maintained at all times. Upon completion of the roadway restriping into its final configuration, Routes 1 & 9 southbound local lanes will be repaved requiring alternating single lane closures.

The $14.2 million federally-funded Routes 1&9/Haynes Avenue Operational Improvements project is designed to improve safety and traffic flow by constructing a new roundabout at the intersection of Routes 1&9 southbound ramps, Haynes Avenue, and Bessemer Street, adding a third lane and shoulder between the Haynes Avenue exit ramp and the Anheuser-Busch entrance ramp, a realignment of the Routes 1&9 southbound ramps, and new pavement on the roadways in the area. The project is being accomplished in stages, and is expected to be completed in winter 2018.

The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website www.511nj.org for construction updates and real-time travel information and for NJDOT news follow us on Twitter @NJDOT_info or on the NJDOT Facebook page.
