I-287 southbound Exit 1A ramp to Route 1 closure required for bridge repairs in Edison

Overnight detours necessary for start of bridge maintenance

(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced the overnight closure and detour of the I-287 southbound Exit 1A ramp to Route 1 northbound for the start of bridge maintenance repairs in Edison, Middlesex County.

Beginning at 11 p.m. tonight, Wednesday, December 12 until 5 a.m. tomorrow, and continuing for the next several weeknights until complete, NJDOT’s contractor Power Concrete Co., Inc., is scheduled to close the I-287 southbound Exit 1A ramp to Route 1 northbound in Edison to begin repairs on the ramp bridge deck and curb, and replace the bridge joints. The ramp will reopen each morning after the overnight work is complete. The following detour will be in place for the next several evenings.

I-287/Route 440 south to Route 1 north overnight Detour:

  • Motorists traveling from I-287/Route 440 southbound will be directed to continue past EXIT 1A, and take the next exit onto CR 514 West/Woodbridge Avenue
  • Make a right at the Main Street traffic light towards Metuchen/Route 1 north to continue on CR 514
  • Bear right onto Route 1 northbound

The federally-funded I-287 southbound Bridge to Route 1 northbound maintenance repairs project began in June 2017, and is expected to be completed in summer 2019.

Portable variable message signs and detour signs are being utilized throughout the project limits to provide advance notification to motorists of all traffic pattern changes associated with the bridge maintenance project.

The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT's traffic information website www.511nj.org for real-time travel information and for NJDOT news follow us on Twitter @NJDOT_info or on the NJDOT Facebook page.
