Summit Avenue Bridge over Route 139 and
Route 139 Upper Level eastbound reopening in Jersey City
St. Paul’s Avenue also reopening and all detours will be removed
(Trenton) -New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced the reopening this Friday of the Summit Avenue Bridge over Route 139, as well as Route 139 Upper Level eastbound between JFK Boulevard and Central Avenue in Jersey City as the Pulaski Skyway Contract 2 nears completion.
On Friday, February 8, NJDOT’s contractor, Schiavone Construction, will make final adjustments to the new traffic signal at Summit Avenue and Route 139 Upper Level, as well as the existing traffic signals at Summit and Newark Avenues; and JFK Boulevard and Route 139 in order to reopen both the Summit Avenue Bridge over Route 139 and Route 139 Upper Level eastbound. St. Paul’s Avenue between JFK Boulevard and Route 139 eastbound also will be reopened. All roads should be open by 5 p.m. Friday, February 8.
The Summit Avenue Bridge is the fifth and final bridge that crosses Route 139 that was replaced as part of the Pulaski Skyway Contract 2. The Palisade Avenue, Baldwin Avenue, Oakland Avenue, and Central Avenue bridges have already been reconstructed. The reconstructed Hoboken Viaduct that carries Route 139 Upper Level eastbound over Route 139 Lower Level also has been completed.
To complete Contract 2, Route 139 Lower Level will have one lane closed with the moveable barrier in place this spring to construct a new median barrier and for final paving of the roadway. In addition, there will be periodic midday closures on the Route 139 Upper Level and cross streets to complete sidewalks, landscaping, highway lights and Intelligent Transportation System work. NJDOT will provide advance notification before any lane closures. Contract 2 is expected to be complete in late Spring 2019.
This work is part of the $104 million Pulaski Contract 2, which will repair and improve the upper and lower levels of Route 139. Route 139 links the eastern end of the Pulaski Skyway to the Jersey City waterfront. During this contract, the deck on Route 139 Upper Level eastbound was replaced, along with five cross street bridges from Palisade Avenue to Kennedy Boulevard. Contract 2, which is nearing completion, is part of the $1 billion Pulaski Skyway rehabilitation project, which is being advanced through 10 separate construction contracts into the year 2020. The massive improvement project will extend the life of the Skyway by 75 years.
