Railroad-crossing repairs begin tomorrow on County Road in Aberdeen

Necessary safety work will require road closure and detours

(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced a railroad crossing rehabilitation project that will require the closure and detour of County Road for about a week, starting tomorrow in Aberdeen, Monmouth County.

Beginning at 9:30 a.m. tomorrow, Thursday, April 4, until 7 p.m. Friday, April 12, the two-way traffic on County Road is scheduled to be closed and detoured between Cliffwood Avenue and Route 35 for work on the railroad grade crossing between Bayview Street and Kennedy Avenue. Local access will be maintained for residents and businesses. The following detours will be in place:

From County Road eastbound:

  • Motorists wishing to turn onto County Road from Cliffwood Avenue will be directed to continue east on Cliffwood Avenue
  • Turn left on Route 35 north
  • Drive past County Road (no left turn is permitted)
  • Go through the traffic light at Raritan Road and take the jughandle to make a U-turn
  • Turn left on Route 35 south
  • Turn right onto County Road

From County Road westbound (from Route 35):

  • Motorists wishing to turn onto County Road from Route 35 will be directed to turn onto Cliffwood Avenue Road westbound
  • Turn right on County Road

The traffic detour will be coordinated with the local police. If work is completed earlier, the roadway will be reopened accordingly.

In order to provide safer and smoother railroad crossing in Aberdeen, the existing crossing will be replaced with new concrete crossings and new asphalt approaches. This federally-funded project is included within NJDOT’s railroad grade-crossing safety program which repairs, upgrades, or removes approximately 30 crossings each year, statewide.

The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT's traffic information website www.511nj.org for real-time travel information and for NJDOT news follow us on Twitter @NJDOT_info or on the NJDOT Facebook page.
