Route 70 overnight lane closure required as the resurfacing project advances in Burlington and Ocean Counties

Alternating traffic pattern necessary for shoulder reconstruction

(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced that Route 70 will be reduced to one lane with an alternating traffic pattern overnight to complete the traffic shift along seven-miles of road between Pemberton, Burlington County and Manchester, Ocean County.

Beginning at 8 p.m., tomorrow, Thursday, April 18, until 6 a.m. the next morning, NJDOT’s Contractor, A.E. Stone, will restripe both sides of the road shifting traffic first to the westbound shoulder and then to the eastbound shoulder on Route 70. This will complete the seven-mile traffic shift on Route 70 between North Branch Road and Whiting New Egypt Road/CR539 that began last week. By Friday morning, two lanes of traffic will be open on Route 70 in both directions.

The new traffic pattern will increase the Route 70 eastbound shoulder width for the asphalt milling and pavement reclamation process. The new configuration will remain in place for approximately three months.

Daytime work will continue from 7 a.m. until 5 p.m. Monday through Friday with occasional overnight work as necessary. Access to properties will be maintained at all times during construction.

The $12.2 million improvement project includes a full depth pavement reclamation and rubblization, milling and paving, guiderail upgrades, construction of ADA compliant curbs and ramps, and drainage improvements on approximately seven miles of roadway, as well as intersection work at Whiting New Egypt Road/CR539.

Variable message signboards and lane closure signs are being utilized throughout the project limits to provide advance notification to motorists of planned closures. NJDOT will provide notification before any lane or ramp closures.

The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT's traffic information website www.511nj.org for real-time travel information and for NJDOT news follow us on Twitter @NJDOT_info and on our Facebook Page.
