Closure is necessary for a traffic shift as bridge project advances
(Trenton) -
New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced an overnight closure and detour tonight of Route 1 southbound as the Route 1 Bridge over Route 1 Business/Brunswick Road replacement project advances in Lawrence Township, Mercer County.
Beginning at 9 p.m., tonight, September 6, until 6 a.m. tomorrow, Saturday, September 7, NJDOT’s contractor Berto Construction, will close and detour the Route 1 southbound at the split with Route 1 Business in order to implement a traffic shift on the Bridge over Route 1 Business/Brunswick Road. The following signed detour will be in place overnight:
Route 1 southbound detour
- Motorists wishing to travel on Route 1 southbound will be directed to Route 1 Business southbound/Brunswick Road
- Turn left onto Whitehead Road
- Turn right onto the Route 1 southbound ramp
By Saturday morning, Route 1 southbound traffic will be shifted in the middle of roadway and Route 1 northbound traffic will be shifted to the right. Two lanes will be maintained in each direction over the bridge.
The $2.9 million dollar federally-funded project will replace the bridge deck, parapets, and concrete median barrier on the bridge. The project is designed in stages to minimize impacts to traffic and will maintain two lanes of traffic in each direction during peak travel times. This project is expected to be complete this winter.
Variable messaging signs are being utilized to provide advance notification to the motoring public of all traffic pattern changes associated with the work. NJDOT will provide more information before any lane closures are scheduled.
The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website www.511nj.org for construction updates and real-time travel information and for NJDOT news follow us on Twitter @NJDOT_info or on the NJDOT Facebook page.
