Route 3 ramps to close
overnight this week in Bergen County

Temporary detours will be in place as
Passaic River Bridge replacement project advances

(Trenton) – New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced the overnight closure this week of three Route 3 ramps to facilitate the removal of part of the old bridge as the project to replace the Passaic River bridge advances.

This week, Tuesday through Thursday, from around 11:30 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. the next day, and 11:30 pm Friday to about 7:00 a.m. Saturday, NJDOT’s contractor, Creamer-Sanzari JV, will be demolishing the old bridge that carried Route 3 over several ramps, requiring the overnight closure of the following ramps:

  • Route 21 to Route 3 eastbound
  • River Road to Route 3 eastbound
  • Route 3 eastbound to Route 21

The following overnight detours are in place:

From Route 3 eastbound to Route 21 northbound:

Motorists will be directed to continue on Route 3 eastbound over the bridge and take the first exit for Rutherford Avenue. Make a left at the first light onto Park Avenue, cross over Route 3 and turn left at the first light onto Marginal Road. Stay in the left lane to get onto Route 3 westbound. Cross the bridge and take the first exit for Route 21 northbound.

From Route 21 northbound or southbound to Route 3 eastbound:

Motorists will be directed to exit at the ramp for Route 3. Follow the ramp to Route 3 westbound. Take the Main Avenue Exit. Turn left at the light onto Main Avenue, turn left at the next light to get on Route 3 eastbound.

The work is part of the ongoing $156 million, federally-funded Route 3 Passaic River bridge replacement project in which NJDOT is replacing the structurally deficient moveable bridge with a new fixed span over the Passaic River, connecting Clifton City in Passaic County with Rutherford and Lyndhurst in Bergen County.  NJDOT has staged the project in a manner that will enable motorists to cross the Passaic River throughout construction.

The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website www.511nj.org for construction updates and real-time travel information.
