Overnight lane closures
on Route 42 northbound in Bellmawr

Demolition of I-295 Bridge over Route 42 to require detour

(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced a series of overnight lane closures on Route 42 northbound to permit the demolition the I-295 northbound bridge over Route 42 as the Direct Connection project progresses in Camden and Gloucester Counties.

Beginning at 8 p.m. tonight, Thursday, December 3, NJDOT’s contractor, PKF Mark III, Inc., will close one lane on Route 42 northbound at Exit 1B. At 10 p.m. two lanes will be closed and all lanes will be closed and detoured at 11 p.m. with all lanes reopened by 5 a.m. on Friday. Friday night there will be a single lane closure at 8 p.m., a double lane closure at 10 p.m. and all lanes will be closured and detoured at midnight. All lanes will then be reopened by 9 a.m. on Saturday.

The following detour will be in effect for those trying to access Route 42 southbound from I-295 southbound:

  • Motorists who want to stay on Route 42 northbound will take Exit 1B and use the left hand ramp to merge back onto Route 42 and 76.

Variable message signs are being utilized throughout the project limits to provide advance notification to motorists of all traffic pattern changes associated with Direct Connection. Throughout the project, NJDOT will provide information before upcoming lane closures or traffic shifts.

This work is part of the Direct Connection project that will provide a seamless route for I-295 motorists traveling through the interchange of I-295, I-76, and Route 42. The Direct Connection project has been divided into four separate construction contracts, with completion of the fourth and final contract in the fall of 2021. NJDOT's project website provides construction activity schedules and updates.

The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT's traffic information website www.511nj.org for real-time travel information, and for NJDOT news follow us on Twitter @NJDOT_info.
