Complete Streets

In December 2009, the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) adopted a Complete Streets policy requiring future roadway improvement projects to include safe accommodations for all users,
including bicyclists, pedestrians, transit riders and the mobility-impaired. This project is located in a shore community where there are significant shared uses of the roadway (pedestrian, bicycle, etc.) during the summer months. Throughout the 12.5 mile corridor, pedestrians often cross at unsignalized intersections connecting the bay and beach. The rebuilt Route 35 will have Complete Streets features to allow for safer and more convenient pedestrian and bicyclist access to and along the road.

The reconstruction of Route 35 will include Complete Streets features such as sidewalks, bicycle compatible roadway shoulders and Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant (ADA) ramps. These features will be built where there is sufficient NJDOT right of way.

Other Complete Streets features include:

  • Pedestrian facilities compliant with the accessibility guidelines of the ADA.
  • Virtually continuous sidewalk along the northbound roadway.
  • Crosswalks designed to be more visible.
  • Pavement markings to maintain existing shoulder parking while allowing for bicycle use. Dedicated bike lanes also will be added to the design where feasible.
  • Additional landscaping to enhance the streetscape and median areas.
