Major Upgrades to the NJ Tax-Filing System

Message for Business Owners and Practitioners

The New Jersey Division of Taxation is modernizing its tax-filing system through a multi-phased approach. Some of the tax filing and payment systems will be temporarily shut down during the upgrade. Use the below Phase 1 links to file through the current system.

What's New

System Upgrade Dates
  • April 26, 2025: Our current online filing and payment systems will be temporarily unavailable for filing. This includes access by Division staff. However, you will still have the ability to view your prior filings and payments. Additionally, the telephone-based Sales Tax filing system will be permanently discontinued.
  • May 14, 2025: Online filing and payment systems will be fully restored and available for use.

Important Filing Extension

Due to the system upgrade, all returns and payments included in Phase 1 (listed below) due from May 1 through May 30, 2025, will receive a 30-day extension. No penalty or interest will apply to taxes related to the Phase 1 release. For example, if your tax return is due on May 20, 2025, you will have until June 20, 2025, to file and pay without penalty or interest.

Action Required for Portal Access

Beginning May 14, 2025, business owners and tax preparers will be able to set up an account on the NJ Tax Portal to access key features and manage filings.

To set up a portal, you will need:

  • Your Taxpayer ID;
  • Line 1 of a recently filed return; and
  • The four-digit PIN (included in your Welcome Letter). If you need a PIN, you can request it on the Business Tax/NJ Tax Portal PIN Requests page;
  • Portal accounts are not mandatory for filing, but it enables smoother, faster processing, including viewing account history and securely storing your information for future filings, and the ability to request account assistance directly from within the portal.

For Tax Preparers
  • Business owners and tax preparers need to set up separate portal accounts. Once the business's Administrative profile is set up, they can grant the tax preparer access as a Delegate to assist with filings.

Resources and Support
  • User guides, FAQs, and videos will be available starting May 14, 2025, to help you set up and navigate the new portal.
