Rights of Adoptees
Adoption Registry
The CP&P Adoption Registry helps adoptees and their birth families, including siblings, find each other if their adoptions were handled by New Jersey’s Division of Child Protection and Permanency.
Here’s what the Registry does for adoptees:
- Registration: You, your adoptive parents (if you’re under the age of 18), and/or your birth parents/family can sign up by filling out a form with information about yourselves and who you want to find. If both sides sign up, the Registry will let you know. You can also send cards or letters to be passed along if the other person joins the Registry.
- Non-identifying Background Information: This means you can get information about your birth family without knowing their names or addresses. It will include non-identifying information surrounding your birth and adoption.
- Limited Search Services: If you’re an adoptee who is an adult, or a minor with your adoptive parents' permission, the Registry staff can help find your birth relatives, using information from your adoption records. They will not do in-depth, private investigations, and they will not search on behalf of the birth family.
- Information and Referral: Staff can talk to you about post-adoption support and searching for birth family, and give you tips on support groups and other resources.
It usually takes about two to three weeks to see if you can register or get non-identifying info, and about 90 days to get that information. Searches can take several months. The good news is, these services are free! For more details or to sign up, you can contact the Adoption Registry Coordinator at the NJ Department of Children and Families. Additional Information can be found at State of New Jersey | Department of Children and Families | Adoption Registry (nj.gov).
