Commissioner's Note:

Dear Colleagues,

As we close out 2025, this season offers a chance to celebrate the progress we’ve made together for New Jersey’s students. I’d like to use this opportunity to extend my deep appreciation to you for your leadership and commitment to the students and families that you serve.

With your partnership, we’ve made meaningful progress this year building a stronger and fairer education system. We are proud, for example, to have provided a historic level of education funding in Fiscal Year 2026 and responded to your feedback on ways to improve predictability and alignment to district needs. We advanced and doubled down on our commitment to early childhood education working with the Legislature to write preschool funding and expansion into law, giving districts the long-term stability they need to plan, grow, and serve more children. We continue to make progress in improving student literacy, and providing additional supports to unleash every student’s full learning potential.

Thank you, school leaders and educators, for all that you do to support staff and students. On behalf of the New Jersey Department of Education, we're proud to work with you on these important programs and wish you a restful holiday season.

Commissioner's Message:

The ongoing federal government shutdown continues to cause uncertainty regarding Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits and its impact on student nutrition. On October 31, 2025 Governor Murphy signed Executive Order No. 402 which declared a State of Emergency due to suspension of benefits and implemented a statewide effort to ensure food access for residents. To support school district efforts to help meet their communities’ food assistance needs during this time, the Department will continue to keep school districts updated and share state resources as they become available.

The Murphy Administration’s SNAP Shutdown Updates website is regularly updated with the current status of benefits, as well as links to resources for those affected by the Federal suspension. This includes:
•    New Jersey Basic Needs Information Hub: Get Food This Week
•    NJ211 Hotline Provides Local Resources to Help Residents with Food, Housing, Crisis, and Health
•    NJ211 Supplemental Food Resource Locations – Search a list of various supplemental food resources in your area
•   New Jersey SNAP homepage
•    Office of the Food Security Advocate: SNAP Benefits and Food Assistance
•    Community Food Banks of New Jersey

Please be sure to share these resources with families who may need help and reach out to your respective NJDOE county office as new needs arise.

Food insecurity is a topic in the spotlight every November, but it’s an especially critical issue this year. Thank you for all you do to support the students and families in your communities.

Commissioner’s Note:

Because of the ongoing federal government shutdown, there is uncertainty about the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits and other supports. Since many schools will be closed for some or all of next week, free school meals may not be accessible. Please review and share State resources with families who may need help.

Thank you for all you do to support students and families and to make sure they have access to the help they need.

Commissioner's Message:

Today I joined Governor Murphy, filmmaker Ken Burns, educators, and other community leaders for a program sponsored by RevolutionNJ, the organization led by the New Jersey Historical Commission that is spearheading events and initiatives to celebrate 250 years of American Independence.

A major part of this initiative includes local school leaders. The New Jersey Department of Education has been involved in the RevolutionNJ campaign through the launch of an educational initiative we’ve dubbed “Revolutionary Schools.” This is more than just a commemoration. Rather, Revolutionary Schools is a collaboration between schools, the Department, and RevolutionNJ to breathe new life into local history and to promote civic engagement. So many important events have occurred right here in our State, providing us with a perfect opportunity to make the history of our independence real and meaningful for our students.

Over the next three years, participating schools will have access to resources, professional development, and experiential learning opportunities to engage students in new and exciting ways. Schools will offer civics initiatives, weave into their curriculum RevolutionNJ’s educational programs like “History Happened Here,” share exemplary instructional practices, and be a part of local and statewide events.

If you haven’t done so already, I invite you to take the first steps by exploring the Revolutionary Schools webpage, where you can take part in the Revolutionary Schools program. Thank you for your involvement in this important initiative.

Commissioner's Message:

Dear Colleagues,

I am excited to welcome back our students, school staff, and families to a new school year filled with opportunity.

This year, more New Jersey children will attend high-quality preschool across more districts than ever before. Literacy will remain a central priority, with expanded investments in tools, training, and evidence-based programs to ensure every child builds a strong foundation in reading. At the same time, students will explore math in ways that aim to develop quantitatively and analytically literate citizens. Likewise, new opportunities in computer science, AI career pathways, and other cutting-edge technologies are preparing our students for the future. Next-generation statewide assessments, new student data systems, and our world-class educators further enhance our schools as the pride of our state and communities.

Yet even as we look ahead with optimism, our excitement is tempered by the devastating tragedy at an elementary school in Minneapolis last week. Even from hundreds of miles away, we share in the grief of parents, students, and staff, and we are reminded that the experience of school is universal. Moments like this strengthen our collective resolve and renew our steadfast commitment to ensuring the safety, security, and well-being of every student and every school community here in New Jersey.

From me personally, and on behalf of my colleagues at the Department of Education, thank you for being an essential part of this effort—and welcome to the 2025–2026 school year.
